Dr. Peter Volpe, M.D.
Peter A. Volpe received his undergraduate degree (cum laude) and medical degree (summa cum laude) from The Ohio State University. After completing his military service with the Navy, he completed his general surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco. During this training he was mentored at the esteemed St James Hospital in London, England. Dr Volpe has been practicing Colon and Rectal Surgery at SFSMG since 1969.
Dr. Volpe has served as the president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery in 1987-1988 and as the president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery in 1991-1992. He has three grown children, all living in Northern California.

Dr. YanEk S. Y. Chiu, M.D.
Yanek S. Y. Chiu was born in Hong Kong, and came to the United States to attend Dartmouth College. He obtained his M.D. degree from Boston University, and did his general surgical training at the Boston City Hospital and the Boston University Hospital, in addition to a year of fellowship in general surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, South Wales, United Kingdom.
His colorectal surgery training was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and he has been in practice in San Francisco with this group since 1981. Bilingual, fluent in English and Cantonese, he has devoted his expertise in the treatment of all aspects of colorectal diseases, with sensitivity and with compassion.

Dr. Michael E. Abel, M.D.
Dr. Abel has been in private surgical practice in San Francisco since 1985. He is board certified in general and colorectal surgery. Dr. Abel is a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. His general surgical training was at Naval Regional Medical Center, Oakland, an affiliated program of University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Abel received his colorectal fellowship training at Cook County Hospital at the University of Illinois. He is an associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Laurence Franklin Yee, M.D.
Laurence F. Yee was born in San Francisco and raised in Northern California. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed his general surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and his fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Yee has been in practice at SFSMG since 1998. Currently, Dr. Yee serves as the vice chairman of surgery at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Jeffrey Sternberg, M.D.
Born and raised in Manhattan, Jeffrey A Sternberg began his educational life at the Horace Mann School. He received his BA in Biochemistry from Dartmouth College (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and attended medical school at the University of Chicago. Dr. Sternberg then moved to Boston for a residency in General Surgery at Harvard University’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. While there, he participated in molecular biology research and achieved fellowship training in Surgical Nutrition. After the eight years of general surgical training in Boston, Dr. Sternberg completed his education with a fellowship year in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Sternberg joined SFSMG in 2000. He is active in the leadership of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Crohn’s Colitis Foundation.

Dr. Michelle Li, M.D.
Michelle Li was raised in Southern California, but has long-standing family and educational ties to the Bay Area. She did her undergraduate work at Stanford University, graduating with degrees in International Relations and Biological Sciences (cum laude). She attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego, and went on to complete her surgical residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Her research endeavors have included forays into the fields of tumor immunology, Alzheimer’s disease, smoking behaviors, taste sensation, and various endocrine disorders. Dr. Li has been in practice at SFSMG since the completion of her training.
